"Dress" by Pranavaa
Hi there! Today I'm sharing a poem that I wrote about Dress Code when it became a controversy I was facing in school. I remember feeling so trapped and confined when the dress code was introduced. I was determined to change the dress code and I ultimately did with the constant help of my peers.
Now, I get to read this poem in satisfaction that we were able to create a change.
"Dress" by Pranavaa
Why do we come up with rules
Of how one should dress
And how one shall not?
"It's to protect you," we say;
Then why do we teach them how to protect
Instead of teaching them how to behave?
If girls can wear pants
Then why can't boys wear skirts?
I can see you projecting your insecurities onto them
As you talk behind their backs
As if it's a sin.
While you stay quiet,
Every time you tell us not to dress this way
Because it's too "distracting" or "offending;"
Know that our silence
Is the scariest thing you can experience.
For we are plotting plans
A hundred miles an hour
Just so that one day,
We can live in a world
Where we can wear anything we wish.
Let people wear what they want
And start educating everyone around you,
Because revolutions don't start on their own
And this world won't change,
Unless you do.
And while you try and censor
This raw form of expression;
I hope that one day
This unedited piece of art
Sees the light of day.
